Position Description:

The Mission

The Research Market Division at FEI is operating at the forefront of development at the nano- and atomic-scales, working with academic institutes and industrial research labs, where the latest SEM, DualBeam™, aberration-corrected and monochromated S/TEM imaging and spectroscopic capabilities give outstanding performance to help researchers perform both basic and advanced research.

The Position

The Vice President and General Manager of the Research Market Division will have full P&L responsibility for the management and growth of FEI’s business in the market segment, directing and controlling the activities of both business and technical functions within the division. Working within a fully integrated team including Engineering, Service, Sales, Applications, Manufacturing, HR, Finance, and IT, this position will provide the technical and marketing leadership that allows FEI to execute on aggressive product and marketing strategies.

Specific deliverables include:
• Ownership of the vision and direction for the Division’s market strategy, planning, budgeting, implementation and maintenance of costs, methods and employees.
• Participating as a member of the FEI Operations Review Board in the establishment of strategic plans and objectives, assuring the Executive team possesses a cohesive understanding of the market drivers and related business objectives needed to achieve success.
• Lead in the development of a Division operating plan that integrates strategic corporate initiatives by product, markets and expense based management practices.
• Through a solid understanding of the primary drivers for growth in the market segment, establish and assure increased customer acceptance, bookings and margins leading to a continued high rate of market penetration for the division.
• Provide strategic product leadership from concept through obsolescence with solutions that address critical needs in the market segment, specifically the establishment and management of product roadmaps that are in sync with anticipated short and long range research trends.
• Monitor activities of key competitors and ensure FEI improves market share through superior product positioning, differentiation and sales strategies.
• Identify, assess and execute partnership and/or acquisition opportunities appropriate to the growth of market share.
• Participate in the ongoing development and execution of a robust and sophisticated technology road map which efficiently meets current and anticipated product requirements driven by technology advancements.
• Leading through example, champion the successful cross functional and cross division communication, collaboration and cooperation in achievement of desired business results.
• Develop an organization that is results-oriented and comprised of highly motivated individuals with a strong retention rate.


The Requirements

This position is ideal for an experienced and proven business leader able to inspire and motivate a dynamic team. The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

• Experienced with 10 or more years of business unit/divisional management within a scientific instrumentation or capital equipment company, having direct ownership for market strategy, innovation and product delivery programs with total revenues in the 200 million range or greater.
• Experience working with and selling to high end academic and/or research markets.
• Successful track record of taking innovative new scientific solutions to market that have achieved measurable market share, customer satisfaction, competitive advantage and revenue growth.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt readily to a dynamic and demanding market with rapidly emerging opportunities.
• Proven ability to influence, change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of others in order to manage conflict, customer negotiations, and/or gain consensus among senior level executives with conflicting priorities.
• Ability to successfully represent the Market Division and its various accomplishments externally and internally.
• The ability to follow through on all commitments and execute to plan. Ability to create a sense of urgency leading to action, driving the execution of critical tasks for the Market Division.
• Proven ability to manage direct reports to meet commitments and maintain accountability. Ability to utilize inclusive management style and solution-based problem solving in order to foster the integration of cross-functional teams within an organization to achieve business goals.
• Passionate about the growth of the business and the team.
• High level of personal and professional integrity.
• Detail orientation combined with “big picture” acumen and able to blend the two views in order to successfully manage a wide range of issues and drive practical decisions.
• Advanced university degree in engineering, science or equivalent coupled with an MBA is highly desired.
• Working knowledge of the financial and accounting practices typically used in P&L management.
• Experience working effectively with a wide variety of international cultures.
• Demonstrated ability to understand technology with knowledge of electron microscopy technologies preferred.
