Position Description:
The Mission
The Market Divisions within FEI provide solutions that add quantifiable economic value in well defined commercial applications encompassing process control, accelerated product design, and application specific analysis. We develop and sell well defined solutions based on FEI's core platforms and technologies. The Market Divisions are entrepreneurial groups within FEI heavily engaged in new market development.
The Position
The Applications group creates and supports high margin, application specific products across all FEI products for the Market Divisions Life Sciences, Research, Industry and Electronics.
This specific position will support our Life Sciences Market Division. The Life Sciences Applications Specialist will be part of the applications group and is considered the expert on Life Science applications. This is a highly visible and customer interfacing position. The Life Sciences Applications Specialist is responsible for the development of world-class methods and protocols to support customer sites worldwide. This position will own the methodology development for our customers advanced analytical technology in their R & D labs. They will also plan, manage and drive advanced development projects and investigate and define new methods and protocols for TEM sample preparation techniques.
Life Sciences Applications Specialist:
Evaluates new applications / solutions for viability in (pre-) concept and Product Management Process (PMP) initiation phases.
Plans and drives advanced development projects through internal PMP.
Delivers cutting edge, Life Science-specific marketing collateral to the Product Marketing group.
Develops Best Practice Documents (BPDs) for advanced applications.
Performs demonstrations on FEI's pre-release products.
Identifies and reports software and hardware issues and escalates as necessary.
Provides test plans, testing and feedback to engineering on system performance, design features, new hardware qualification and problem resolution.
Conceives, plans, and conducts experimental research for advance applications knowledge as applied to use of FEI systems for assigned markets.
Collects, compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process
or material specifications.
Acts as a communication conduit to R&D engineering regarding new hardware and feature specification.
Provides technical support and guidance to Sales and Service Divisions, R&D, Manufacturing,
Customer Service and other departments as required.
Recommends and advises on technical direction for potential applications consistent with customer
requirements and feasibility.
The Requirements
The ideal candidate for this position is a flexible Applications Specialist with an education and career experience in the Life Sciences / Biology related fields. The Life Sciences Applications Specialist will be someone who can think out of the box and likes to be engaged in a variety of tasks. They will enjoy solving the most difficult and advanced technical challenges in order to excel in this position.
The successful candidate will have a combination of the following:
MS or PhD University degree in Biology, Bio-Chemistry, Molecular Biology or other Life Sciences related discipline.
Demonstrated experience working in a Biology or Life Sciences research & development lab.
3-5+ years of practical experience in the development of biological sample preparation techniques for cryo temperature electron microscopy (I.E. protein complexes, viruses, cellular biology, etc).
5+ years using analytical tools such as SEM, TEM and FIB technology for the research and analysis of biological applications.
Must be able to demonstrate the ability to develop new and improved methods and protocols used in R & D labs related to Life Sciences product development.
Must be proficient in most of the basic Microsoft office software products (i.e., excel, power
point, word)
Excellent communication skills are required in this position as the role provides critical interfaces between customers, R&D and engineering within the factory.
Must be able to obtain a valid passport and travel internationally as required.
